Lloyd Minthorne is an indelible talent in today’s music scene. His CD “Just Visiting Planet Earth” is a testament to what can happen when songwriting basics are combined with studio experimentation in conjuring up accessible music. As a lyricist, he tackles important subject matter (e.g. “Victims of Greed”). As an instrumentalist, he has crafted a poppy yet edgy sound with slapping bass lines and seamless keyboard harmonies. His keyboard solos are virtuosic and rhythmically tight. Fortunately, he doesn’t let leads get in the way of the overall presentation, firing off thematic runs that add to the songs. Lloyd’s voice represents a cross-section of the following: Robin Zander (Cheap Trick), Boy George, the singer on the first Shotgun Messiah album, and at times the lead in any number of Broadway dramatic productions. If these references have gone over your head or they intrigue you, then get yourself a copy of this CD.
